Jaarbeurs: our light on tomorrow
Sustainability is at the heart of Jaarbeurs. Our ambition is to be the smartest and most sustainable conference and event venue in Europe. We believe in a world where the impact on the earth is reduced by reusing raw materials, controlling and reducing waste and generating our own green energy. We would like to have a share with good solutions to be sustainable. With the 2.3 million people we host annually, we can have a positive impact on our environment and the people we touch.
Our sustainable ambition flows through the organization. From separating waste in the office to sustainable stand construction and from a predominantly vegetarian menu to limiting printing. Together with our clients, we are building a sustainable future for our exhibitions and events. To this end we are working hard on digitalization so that we save paper, but we also encourage our visitors, for example, to choose sustainable transportation when they come to Jaarbeurs. As proud residents of Utrecht, we contribute to making the city a sustainable base for the future and for this we support local social initiatives. We want to become a CO2-neutral place and preferably even a CO2-positive place.
We go green with Trees for All
Booking an event and planting a tree? From now on, that happens automatically when you organize your meeting, conference or trade fair with us. Together with Trees for All we will plant one tree for every booking made in the Dutch and international projects of Trees for All. And hopefully in the future also in Utrecht itself.

UFI Sustainable Development Award
By reducing food waste and making our food supply more sustainable, we can reduce our carbon emissions. We encourage employees, organizers and visitors to make sustainable food choices focused on plant-based eating. To this end, we have already taken several steps. For example, in the spring of 2022 we won the UFI Sustainable Development Award for the approach and impact we have had so far to reduce our CO2 emissions.
Vegetarian offer
Meat and meat production is one of the biggest polluters, looking at CO2 emissions. For all our visitors, we prepare many meals in our restaurants and at catering outlets and there we have made sustainable choices. In our restaurants, 90% of the menu consists of vegetarian dishes. In the foodbook, a book of options that event organizers can use to create their menu, 80% of the offerings are vegetarian.
Less food waste
No matter how carefully we buy and plan, sometimes good food is left over. Food left over at our Speys restaurant can be ordered through the Too Good To Go app. Short shelf life meals that would otherwise be thrown away are given a second chance. We also donate food to the Food Bank. By doing so, we combat food waste and food ends up well with people who have less to spend.
Food that comes back from events and green waste from the kitchen we dispose of in a smart bin, Winnow. With this, we measure how much leftover food and green waste is thrown away. With the resulting data, we can make smart choices while purchasing our supplies.
We compost the remaining green waste in our own composting machine that has been in use since this year. In the future, we plan to use the compost to grow our own vegetables.
